Atmosphere – The Wind (Sad Clown Bad Dub II)
This is the song “The Wind” by Atmosphere from Sad Clown Bad Dub II. A very metaphorical and symbolic song. I THINK that this song is a very well written commentary on the state of Hip-Hop at the time, amongst other things. “The Wind” seems to be representative of a trend, a fad or something that will pass by. “It’s nothing, it’s only a little wind. A distinct, somewhat discreet approach to the maize” – the maize here represents the public and the wind represents your average flash in the pan pop OR rap star. “Come on, keep up the pace, you’ve already won the race; cute baby hamster, let’s try to make him run in place” – Possibly questioning why some emcees seem to lose quality once they “win the race” ie reach the top. An alternate interpretation is that Slug may be talking about himself, but I won’t go on about that. “Look at the wounds, it’s destined to die soon. And the way I see it, we’re obligated to eat it – so treat it, with grins while it’s standing on its last limbs. Feed it and fatten it up for when the feast begins” – this is a representation of how stars can be build up and then knocked down easily. Perhaps many people recognise the fact that this star will not be around (look at the wounds) but they still treat him/her well so that they can cause them to fall from grace. “I drew the blueprints out on a sidewalk with chalk, so when the rain starts, they won’t be able to read our plans” – Most definitely a reference to an Aesop Rock track called “No Regrets …
